Some photos from Paris!

David Markham in The Louvre

Hey folks! Well I’m back in Australia after an AMAZING two weeks in France. The above photos, and a number of others you can find in the Napoleon 101 Flickr Group, was taken by our new friend Nicholas Stark, a 17 year-old student from the US who joined us for a couple of days in Paris.

On July 14, Bastille Day, we shot some video at Les Invalides, the Arc de Triomphe and Les Invalides. David provided some commentary of Napoleon’s tomb, the Arc, and various Napoleonic paintings and exhibits at The Louvre. This video, along with the audio and video recordings from the INS congress at Ajaccio, will be available on the DVD pack I’ll be putting out asap.

By the way, in the Flickr Group you’ll see a couple of photos taken at Changi Airport (Singapore) of the Legion Of Merit medal I was presented with, by David, at the Gala Dinner at the end of the Congress. It was a great honour and something every button pusher aspires to. David was also presented with the Medal Of The City Of Ajaccio by the Mayor of Ajaccio during a cocktail reception held at their city hall, beneath an original painting of Napoleon in his ceremonial robes from the coronation. There will be photos of that, and much much more, going up in the Flickr group over the next week or so, so keep an eye out.

Hi there! I’m a fairly new listener, having discovered your podcast about three months ago. I started from the beginning, listening to an episode almost nightly ever since (with many nights spent on re-listening to episodes I fell asleep during due to too many late nights). I really wish I’d owned an Ipod a year ago so I would have known about this wonderful sounding event. I hope it was every bit as entertaining and informative as it sounds. I must say, before discovering this wonderful show a Napoleonic vacation wouldn’t have stirred my interest, but now it is a dream I hope to make a reality in the future.

If anyone who reads this has a taste for some Napoleonic fiction, I’d very highly recommend the “Exploits and Adventures of Brigadier Gerard” by Arthur Conan Doyle. It is quite funny in places and always filled with adventurous derring-do as well as a very real feeling of the love and respect Naploeon’s soldiers felt for their Emperor.

Thanks again for putting on such a wonderful program. It has unlocked a previously unknown love of history in me – to the extent that as an adult returning to college in August I will be majoring in history.

    Keep up the great work!

Yeah Darren! Trying to get a new show done next week. I haven’t had a chance to even look at the stuff from the Congress yet, will hopefully get to it soon…. soon…

    Hello,
I have just discovered your podcast. I did not know much about Napoleon and dont really know why I subscribed exept for my love of history. I am sure I am not the first you have converted into a Napoleon fan. Thank you for obviously putting so much time into this and making my work days much more interesting.
    Thanks again,
    Ashley

    1. If you are wondering what happened at Waterloo, listen to Carlin’s Podcast series “Hardcore History” and the episode titled “History Under the Influence”. He suggests that Napoleon was on heroin for his pain.

    2. It would be nice if the presenters would try to cure their stuttttttttering. It is verrrrrrrry annnnnnnoying.

    Otherwise, fantastic show.

    Cheers,
    Ed
